5 Star NCAP rating for new Volkswagen Golf

The new Volkswagen Golf has won a five star rating from the European New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP) crash test agency.

The new Golf created history by scoring 36 points out of a total 37 points allotted to occupant protection which led to the winning of a five-star award. The new Golf also scored prestigious four stars in child safety and a further 3 stars for pedestrian safety.

The new Golf is the safest vehicle on sale today equipped with seven air bags and knee airbags as standard across the range. In addition Golf is equipped with Electronic Stabilisation Programme (ESP), ABS, Brake Assist, side impact protection, newly introduced whiplash reducing headrests and strong chassis structure ever built before.

Volkswagen has always been giving top priority to the safety of occupants. The new Golf could also be specified with seatbelt sensors for backseat occupants which enables driver to check in the instrumental panel whether occupants were wearing seatbelts.

Volkswagen’s history of being at the forefront of occupants’ safety speaks volumes. Its launch car, Volkswagen 411, in 1968, featured a passenger survival cell and front crumple zones. Mk I Golf in 1974 was built with self-stabilising steering and fuel tank protection. Golf Mk II was provided with a newly developed ABS while Mk III Golf in 1991 was built with collapsible steering column, traction control and side impact protection. With 26 million sales in 34 years form Mk I to Mk VI, the Volkswagen Golf has continued to set new safety standards.

Ordering has commenced from October 17 while the Golf goes on sale in the UK on January 6, 2009
