An Eco Friendly SUV?
SUV is a four letter word for most environment lovers. But it seems BMW is trying to change that, with its new BMW X5 Vision Efficient Dynamics diesel hybrid engine, the prototype of which is touted to be exhibited as BMW’s mystery entry at the Geneva Motor Show.
This car boasts of having the highest fuel economy as compared to any other car in its all wheel drive SUV segment with car speed and performance at par with all the others. This isn’t just a tall claim; it’s backed up by a mileage of a whopping 43.5 mpg, and Co2 emissions of just 172g/km, while taking only 8.9 seconds to go from 0 to 62 mph. All this is due to the Visual Efficient dynamics system, better explained in lay terms as a 2.0 liter Twin turbo Diesel Hybrid Concept.
Another innovative feature is the Brake Energy generation system that utilizes lithium ion batteries in the boot that can be used to store power generated and this power can in turn be used to run the air conditioning, coolant pump and the power steering system. And it doesn’t just stop here! There are also roof mounted solar panels 1 square meter in length which can trap solar energy, use it at that very moment or store it for further use.
A look at the exterior will show you the 19 inch alloy wheels that help to lower fuel emissions, the spokes help to cut down wind resistance to reduce the amount of power this X5would need to produce at high speeds.
The best thing about this car is that instead of just making a fantastical prototype of what future environmentally friendly cars may be like; this one could actually be feasible and seem almost ready for production. It is a good indication of what a little thinking and ingenuous engineering could produce.
