Audi-Porsche Showdown A No Show
The much planned and long awaited Audi answer to the Porsche Boxter may in reality not materialize. It was long part of car industry-lore that Audi was in the process of designing a “baby” version of its R8 supercar, dubbed the R4, for a face off with Porsche’s Boxter. In February 2007, Audi had claimed that the R4 would go into production in 2010 and would aim at making 30,000 sales a year.
However, as of last week, Audi has denied having an R4 in their catalogue ever. It is rumoured that this new development might be as a result of Porsche’s upcoming majority stake in Volkswagen, parents of Audi. It would be obvious that Porsche executives would be wary of any product that may directly threaten a Porsche offering.
There are a number of takes on this situation, with a faction believing that a competition between Porsche and Audi would prove to be detrimental in the long run. However, others believe that the R4 would probably not have impacted Porsche sales at all, as they were not aimed at the same prospective customer niches.
