Automakers innovating with new fuel sources
Is alternative fuel the next leap? Will vehicles be powered by compressed air or organic waste? Can automakers find an alternative for rising gas prices? The answer lies in the recent surge in R&D for hybrid and electric cars and trucks. With soaring gas prices, record-high crude oil and global warming automakers have to delve deep into the subject and find an alternate fuel source. Auto giants General Motors, Ford and Chrysler have started production of hybrid and electric cars and trucks. Even small automakers and companies are joining in the race for supremacy.
Compressed air-vehicles is one such alternative explored by Guy Negre, a former Formula One motor racing engineer. His company MDI Enterprises has been developing the prototype for quite a while now. With a top speed of 150 km/h the prototype runs on biofuel and fossil fuel. How does it work? The compressed air stored in onboard tanks is released to operate the engine’s pistons. The onboard heater automatically kicks fter the car touches 56 km/h and expands the volume of the compressed air. The heater runs on a small amount of fossil fuel or biofuel from any gas station.
Ford Motor Company has started research and development of the air-hybrid design in collaboration with engineers at the University of California, Los Angeles. Credits even go to Toronto-based ZENN Motor Company. The Zenn electric car is the companies famed low-speed vehicle ( LSV). Powered by a set of six heavy-duty, lead-acid batteries the vehicle has a top speed of 40 km/h. They come with a price tag of US $16,000.
Well from big gas pumped sedans to small minimalist-nature friendly vehicles. We have a great hope of finding the perfect fuel to drive our cars.
