Brake Checks On Pontiac Solstice and Sky Roadster

After receiving nearly 40 complaints that the braking mechanism in the Pontiac Solstice 2008 and the 2.0 liters Turbocharged Saturn Sky Roadster could be faulty, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced plans to carry out a preliminary investigation.

The problem, according to complainants, is the excessive brake pedal force that is required to bring the cars to a halt, especially when the car is given a cold start, as it generally happens in a driveway or in a parking lot. At least one crash incident is suspected to have taken place due to the same problem.

The two vehicles use a stability control module pump in their braking system that functions to increase the hydraulic pressure in the wheels during situations that have low booster vacuum, example when the engine is warming up.

General Motors had also issued a bulletin that instructed their service centers to recalibrate the electronic brake control to address the issue in question.

The NHTSA preliminary investigation will verify whether the cars should be upgraded or scrapped. The results of this investigation can typically be expected in four months.
