California Dreaming
Ferrari has just released the first press photos of what they deem to be their new potential dream car. Taking over the “California” mantle of one of Ferrari’s most collectable models, the new Ferrari GT promises to be not only a feast for the eyes, but also has a few technological gems and firsts up its sleeves.
The Ferrari California GT, designed by Pininfarina, is all set to debut at the Paris Motor show, in October. It is slotted to be in the same league as some of Ferrari’s newer offerings such as the 612 Scaglietti and the 430 Scuderia. Like the Scaglietti, the new California marks an addition in the Grand Tourer segment, at the entry-level, just behind the 599 Barchetta.
The design, as is trademark Ferrari, looks like a dream. Smooth curves all around, with backward-sweeping front headlamps, a distinctive grill, a rising waistline and the characteristic circular rear headlights, all of which make for an exciting exterior. The interior, accessorised by beautiful trimmings, has an interesting 2+ layout concept. This increases the owner’s options as far as usage is concerned. The body is built using aluminum to keep it light weight. Despite all the afore-mentioned highlights, the main attraction of the design remains the light-weight, aluminum, hard top which can be pulled down and stowed away as easily as a click of a button. This will come as the standard in all the versions of the car.
This V-8 engine definitely packs in a few punches. This 4,300 cc monster comes placed in mid-front position, for the first time ever in Ferrari history, all 454 bhp of which is linked to a seven-speed-clutch-transmission. It comes with some other attractive features such as direct fuel injection, a flat crankshaft, and a multilink rear suspension system for ease of driving. This car has the ability to sprint from 0 to 100 km/hour in under 4.0 seconds. The greens might be interested in knowing that that car’s emissions are pegged at 410g/km CO2.
All though no definite date has as yet been set for its launch, it is rumoured that the car will hit UK showrooms in 2009 at an estimated cost of £130,000.
