No car can be 100% reliable. A car can catch for different reasons. Most of the time it will be an electrical problem but over heating or a build fault may also be the cause.

Car fire in a garage or dealership don’t usualy cause mutch damages thanks to fire sprinkler systems but when on the road it can be dangerous. Take the example of the fire on the M40 last bank holidays weekend, witch blocked the road in both direction for over 5 hours.

So if your are driving and your car catch on fire what do you have to do?

First you obviously need to stop, but don’t pull over in the middle of the road. Signal the change of direction and reach the secure side of the road. Then shut down the engine and leave the car immediately. Find a secure spot as far from the car and the road as possible and signal to any onlookers to do the same. When no one is in danger alert the security services.

In any case do not attempt to fight the fire yourself. Toxic fumes are the first cause of car fire death. Plus opening the bonnet is likely to cause a rapid increase in fire intensity due to the sudden surge of air.
