Car sales in Europe decline for 7 consecutive months

A big slump in car sales across Europe has brought European governments under severe pressure to rescue auto industry. Sales in November were down by 25.8%.

The European manufacturers’ trade body, ACEA, claimed that sales were down for consecutive seven months at a rate not witnessed by the industry in last 10 years. The trade body reported fall of 7.1% in overall sales, with sale of 1m fewer cars in Western Europe than last year.

The sales in Spanish market were down 49.6%, in the UK down by 36.8%, in Italy it fell by 29.5% and in Germany by 17.7%. The recession which spread across Europe, also caught up with east and central Europe where sales in November declined by 22.6%. Market in Romania was down by more than 50% with only exception of Poland and Czech Republic which achieved positive growth.

The figures were out after Fiat’s announcement of lay off of 50,000 workers and closure of Italian plants for one month and French government’s big offer of direct aid to car manufacturers. The British industry and Germany’s Volkswagen are tapping government schemes to tide over crises.

Renault, world’s biggest truck maker, posted a 21% fall in November deliveries, while Volvo reported decline of 42%.
