Carmakers unwilling to accept European Commission’s prescription to cut carbon emissions
Germany’s car industry is blocking the green initiative of the European Commission. The VDA lobby group representing Volkswagen, Dailmer and BMW and other companies has demanded that politicians should not decide the ways and means of achieving emission cuts. The car industry wants this to be the sole prerogative of the car manufacturers.
In fact, the VDA lobby has launched this fresh assault on the European Commission’s green initiative after supporting it initially. The lobbying has commenced just before the meeting of European Union’s environ ministers. Matthias Wissmann, VDA president, declared that it fully supports targets set for emission cuts, but would not accept Commission’s guidelines on how to achieve it. He points out that the Brussels’s plan, under technical reasons, does not permit calculation of emission reductions through energy saving innovations by the producers. He cited the example of car sunroof that generates solar power. Brussels is not prepared for “eco-innovations” because it would make the measurement of impact difficult. VDA opines that these can be measured, but need to be included in Europe-wide car testing rules.
