City Dwellers’ Dream Come True
For all those tired of trying to fit your cars into just-about-big-enough-for-the car spaces and in the bargain back-and-forth-ing for nearly 5 minutes, you can finally heave a sign of relief. If the “Park Assist Vision”, designed by Volkswagen, is a sign of what lies in our future, parking woes will soon be history.
This prototype designed by Volkswagen will be made public at the Hanover Fair in Germany this week and will be available as optional equipment on certain Volkswagen European models. These include the Touran, the Tiguan and the Pissat.
The Park assist Vision operates with the aid of car-mounted cameras, a series of ultrasonic sensors, electromechanical steering systems and a computer that will register the actual size of the parking space, and when triggered, will automatically park the car. What makes this more exciting than the automatic parking in the Lexus LS sedan is that unlike the Lexus system, the VW system does not even require the driver to be seated in the car.
This is how it will actually wor- The driver activates the parking system by selecting a parking space which will be shown on the dash-board monitor. The driver can then shift the lever to P-indicating parking, and step out of the car. The rest of the parking will be carried out with a button on the key fob. The car will park itself in the chosen parking space, with the aid of the ultrasonic sensors, and then proceed to shut off its engine and will even lock the doors. In case of problems, a button on the key fob can be used to arrest this procedure.
VW are sure that this exciting piece of technology will soon go into production.
