Designed in Europe, built in the UK – the new Toyota Avensis
Built on the success of its past models, Toyota’s European flagship model Avensis had its world premier at Paris Motor Show. Designed in Europe and built at Burnaston plant in the UK, it delivers high level of quality, dynamic performance and very comfortable drive.
New Avensis would also be more environment friendly with CO2 emissions to 140g/km level. It uses the Toyota Optimal Drive concept by introducing upgraded diesel engines, new petrol engines and advanced transmissions to enhance efficiency and minimise emissions.
According to the chief engineer Takashi Yamamoto, company had commenced the project by aiming to put European mark on the car design. In order to achieve this objective it sent 35 engineers from Toyota Motor Europe to Japan to join with Toyota Motor Corporation’s development team. There was extensive exchange of ideas on design and features from European angle. After returning to Europe for finalisation of design, those 35 engineers could transfer the knowledge acquired from the development team to create new Avensis.
Takashi believes that interaction between the two teams and transfer of knowledge was one of the key factors for evolution of highly efficient development process that led to a proud achievement which was nothing less than D-segment’s ‘cutting edge’.
