Diesel Porsche Is Coming?
Porsche, German Sports car makers, may consider launching a diesel version of their popular SUV, the Cayenne. If this should work out, expect this new diesel-muscled version in 2009. Porsche plans to achieve this by taking the aid of Volkswagen-based technology, in which Porsche currently owns a 31% stake but plans to raise it to a majority stake.
This is a clear departure from the statement made by Porsche CEO Wendelin Wiedeking, last year, saying that he believed that diesel cars did not make much economic sense considering the additional costs and the low numbers of Porsche cars sold. However, the new direction that they are ready to head in comes as a result of constant re-evaluation of diesel feasibility.
Porsche will now consider diesel cars if they think that North American can get past their collective dislike of diesel cars. According to Klaus Berning, Porsche’s Head of Sales and Marketing, the only way this switch would make sense is if theses cars could be sold in large numbers.
The future still remains sketchy though, as only 3% of 16 million new cars sold in the U.S. last year were diesel. A lot of luxury car makers including Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, and Volkswagen among others, are trying to encourage Americans to shed their misconceptions about diesel cars and embrace the new, clean diesel cars especially in the wake of the ever increasing petrol costs.
Sources believe that Porsche will introduce a diesel model of the Cayenne by mid-2009, which will be powered by a V6 engine reminiscent of the one used by Audi on its Q7 SUV. Porsche also plans to launch a hybrid version of the Cayenne in 2010 and a hybrid version of its Panamera Sedan.
