Environment friendly Opel CNG Engine

In 2009, Opel will further enhance its contribution in making environment friendly cars with introduction of its 1.6-liter turbo Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) engine. 110 kW/150 hp and 210 Nm torque new engine is developed by GM Powertrain. According to Alain Visser, Chief Marketing Officer, GM Europe, Opel is pursuing its objective of making more efficient turbo charging engines. These engines will ensure lesser fuel consumption and lower emissions without compromising on performance. He declares that environmental awareness and driving fun are equally important for the car business today.

Propulsion units of Opel’s natural gas powered vehicles produce 10% less carbon dioxide than diesel model. Nitrogen oxide is almost 80% less as compared to diesel model. Exhaust gases from these engines are almost soot free.  With the roll out of first Zafira CNG vehicle 7 years ago, Opel opened a new chapter of natural gas vehicles in the car manufacturing industry. Opel is the first automaker to achieve optimization of engines for natural gas as well as gasoline.

Zafira compact mono-cab is Opel’s most popular environment friendly models today. This seven-seater operates with 1.6 CNG aspirated engine. It emits just 138 g/km CO2 and captured a place in the list of German Motor Club Environmental Car, in 2007/2008. Zafira has retained the title for 5 years in a row.
Opel is a leader in production of natural gas-powered series vehicles in Europe. Last year witnessed a record jump of 50% in sales of Combo and Zafira CNG models. CNG vehicles continue to be most popular in Germany and Italy.
