Fiat On The Look Out For A Detroit Partnership
The burst of the American economic bubble has been a calamity of sorts for the automobile industry and the latest inconvenience is caused to Italian based Fiat, that intends to restart the sale of Alfa Romeos in the US. Because of the rapidly worsening gulf between the Euro and the Dollar, it would be extremely unprofitable for the Italian carmakers to make their vehicles in Europe and import them to America as it would have done before.
To make their re-entry into the US markets successful, Alfa Romeo has one of two options. They may construct a new plant in Mexico or take the easier route; by latching onto the unused resources of an American automaker, Alfa Romeo may considerably cut costs.
Fiat Boss Sergio Marchionne said that Fiat intends to start Alfa Romeo production in the US by 2011 or 2012, well knowing that they may have to face losses in the first few years. He said that he was ready to for these losses as long as he knew that they were on their way to turning profitable and finding a suitable partner.
Fiat is keen to launch the Alfa Romeo 159 Sedan and the Mi.To and 149 hatchback in the US. The Mi.To minicar has been designed to be in sync with US safety and emission standards. In addition to these Alfa Romeo models, Fiat may also consider re-launching the Iveco commercial truck division in the US as also the 500 minicar. The car to look out for though, is the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione and its supercar variant, the 8C Spider, although cheaper versions of these two may not be built in America.
