General Motors reveals its new Chevrolet Volt
General Motor Corp. on Tuesday disclosed about the production version of their highly anticipated Chevrolet Volt.
Chevrolet Volt is a plug-in electric car which has become a centrepiece. It has moved away from gas –guzzling SUVs to recharge slumping sales.
Rick Wagoner, Chief Executive introduced the Chevrolet Volt. Chevrolet Volt is a small, curvy 4-seater car. It was introduced at the automaker’s Detroit Headquarters at the time of General Motors 100th anniversary celebration.
Rick Wagoner said that Chevrolet Volt is General Motors’ commitment to the future. He added that they need such technological innovation as their industry needs to respond present and future energy and environmental challenges.
This event is being compared with Toyota Motor Corp in the race of being the first in market of plug-in cars. General motors has pushed hard to develop Chevrolet Volt in time. It will hit the showrooms in 2010.
High fuel prices and credit crunch have dragged auto sales down. The sales of General Motors were down to by 18.5 % in first eight months. Toyota’s Prius model which is fuel saving hybrid car was one of few bright spots for the industry in the year 2008.
General Motors is cutting down on costs and selling off its assets to generate finance. Volt is designed to run 40 miles on lithium-ion battery pack. Volt can be charged at any standard electric outlet.
