German automotive supplier Continental sets up R & D and manufacturing unit in India
Continental, the international automotive supplier, has expanded its base by setting up R&D centre and electronic manufacturing unit in India at Electronic City, Bommasandra, and Bangalore. Continental, with an eye on the booming Indian auto electronic market, will develop and manufacture new components by investing 22,00 million INR in the new facility.
The facility at Bommasandra, Bangalore will develop and produce components for Chasis and Safety Division, Interior Division and Powertrain Division of Continental. It will produce instrument clusters for two-wheelers, commercial vehicles, passenger cars, gasoline and diesel engine management systems, body control units and electronic controls for power assisted steering.
Member of the Automotive Management Board of Continental and also the President Asia, Jay Kunkel, talking about the forecast on auto manufacturing, informs that from 2012 onwards nearly 50 per cent of cars manufactured worldwide will be produced in Asia. The emerging markets like India and China will be the major contributors to the auto market in Asia. He also adds that manufacture of mega-trend affordable cars for growth markets of India and China will be the main focus of auto industry in the next decade.
Speaking at the launch of the new headquarters, Managing Director of Continental Automotive Components (India) Pvt. Ltd, Dr. Markus Distelhoff, said that a predictable growth at a CAGR of 15 per cent in India, prompted Continental to deepen its business in India. Elaborating further he said that Continental will strive to provide affordable components and systems to Indian market by deploying its extensive expertise of vehicle technology. The new plant, according to Dr. Markus, will create a strong footprint in India.
