GM boosts electric and hybrid vehicles production

There has been a sudden race to develop the finest batteries and hydrogen fuel cells. Well the reason is the keen interest automakers have taken to manufacture electric and hybrid vehicles. General Motors Corps’ new global engineering group is specially assigned to speed up development of electric and hybrid vehicles. Chrysler LLC did the same in September last year. The batteries and hydrogen fuel cells technology will help power cars and trucks.

The GM team is head by Robert Kruse. The operations will be setup in Warren, Milford, Mainz-Kastel, Germany, Shanghai and China. The 400-member engineering team will work on European carbon dioxide emissions regulations as well as developing global vehicles. GM tries staying the race with five new models as Toyota dominates the gas-electric hybrid market with its Prius and Camry hybrids.

The electric vehicle unit started by GM last year targets 2010 to bring the Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle to market. The Volt will be designed so it can be simply recharged by connecting to a home outlet.

So let the race begin!
