GM To Launch Second Small Car In India

Encouraged by the success of its first small car venture in India, GM is keen to come out with a similar small car in India within the next two years. The first of the GM small cars in India was the Chevrolet Spark, although the second one may not be under the Chevrolet banner.

India’s car industry has been in the news these days for the record breaking low cost vehicle made by Tata Motors called Nano. While the new GM car does not intend to compete with the Nano directly, the price for the new car will definitely be lower than that of the Chevrolet Spark.

David Reilly, group vice-President of General Motors, stated that he believed that the Nano has opened discussions all over the automobile industry about the sales potential of such low cost cars. He believes that it has spurred most companies to think of ways to reduce the sales cost of their existing car models.

About 7% of GM’s total market share comes from the Asia-Pacific region and this figure is set to increase because of the economic boom in this region especially in India. GM’s portfolio in India consists of the U-VA, Aveo, SRV, Tavera, Optra and Captiva in addition to the Spark. The Spark was released in India in April 2007. Around 2,700 units of the Spark are produced every month and accounts for 35-40% of the company’s total output from their setup.

David Reilly went on to explain that their Halol Plant in Vadodra, Gujarat, cranks out approximately 60,000 to 85,000 annually and they plan to expand this by 140,000 more every year.
