Guess Who Joins The Green Brigade
The recently concluded Geneva Car Show had a lot of auto makers laying big stress on the new global buzz word- environment friendliness. Surprisingly Geneva saw an announcement from world famous car makers Bentley claiming their intention to turn over a green leaf. Bentley is not exactly famous for eco friendliness with their cars spewing carbon emissions in the range of a scary 396-465g/km on an average at present.
But Bentley Motors’ boss Franz-Josef Paefgen stated at Geneva, that all that was about to change, as they were making an effort to make all Bentley cars capable of delivering less than 120g/km by 2012. This they plan to achieve by being the first ever car makers in their segment, in the whole world, to manufacture cars that will run on renewable fuel options.
Not one to look for short cuts, Bentley is looking at long term solutions that will help them achieve their goal. Along with renewable fuel enabled engines, Bentley also plans to design new power trains that will deliver a 40% betterment in fuel economy and flex fuel engines to be introduced in all Bentley vehicles across the board by 2012.
One of the areas that they intend to work towards is the application of technology to their 8 and 12 cylinder engines to improve engine management, better the transmission and drivelines and attempt to make the cars lighter. All this will ultimately lead to a drop in Carbon dioxide emissions.
Although a lot of their future plans depend on renewable biofuels, their efficiency and availability, Bentley remains optimistic that this early step will help them speed towards acceptance at a time when a market for such fuels and such cars develop.
