High performance engines of Bentley Continental GTC Speed and GTC
Bentley Continental GTC Speed and GTC cars are equipped with Bentley’s twin-turbocharged, 6-litre W12 engine produced at company’s Crewe engine plant. Bentley W12 is a 12-cylinder compact engine with 4 camshafts and 48 valves with constantly variable valve timing. ZF 6-speed automatic transmission is coupled to transmit power.
The Bentley W12, 600 bhp (610PS) engine of the GTC Speed, develops 9% more power and 15% higher torque than the 552 bhp (560PS) standard GTC.
Efficiency of engine has been improved making use of light-weight components and minimising friction, while torque has been increased through low inertia turbochargers and minimal turbo lag.
600 bhp W12 develops torque of 750 Nm maximum at 1700 rev/min up to 5600 rev/min. It endows top speed of 200mph to Bentley Continental GTC Speed, and acceleration from 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds and 0-100 mph in 10.6 seconds.
6-speed transmission can be used in two fully automatic modes viz. Drive and Sport or as clutch-less manual. The continuous all-wheel drive provides exceptional traction to both models in all weathers. A highly sensitive centre torsen differential is deployed to facilitate drive transfer between front and rear axles.
Both models feature electronic stability programme (ESP 8.1). The ‘dynamic mode’ of GTC Speed increases wheel slip at higher speed enabling full exploitation of engine’s potential by the driver.
Director Brian Gush proudly claims that new GTC Speed exemplified Bentley’s passion for creation of cars which delivered exceptionally high performance and provided immense driving enjoyment. It would redefine achievements of a luxury convertible.
