Jaguar Land Rover to terminate 850 agency jobs
About 850 workers from Jaguar Land Rover’s West Midland unit would be losing their jobs as the car company’s executives sought urgent help from government for car sector.
The latest announcement of job cuts took the total job losses to 1,450 during 2008. Jaguar Land Rover is battling with financial problems which have dragged entire auto industry into unprecedented crisis. The UK’s major auto manufacturers have asked ministers for support to tide over big plunge in sales due to inadequate credit supply and collapse of consumer confidence.
The company informed that IT and Engineering staff were severely affected by the job cuts. 600 permanent staff out of 15,000 employed by the company in the UK has already opted for voluntary redundancy. Company has scheduled weekly shutdowns and non-production days across entire UK plants for cutting down production.
A spokesman described these measures as hard decisions but argued that rapid and responsible actions were needed for better future of the business.
Jaguar Land Rover representatives met the Business Secretary, Lord Mandelson, and requested to evolve a rescue package for the UK’s auto industry which makes an annual turnover of £51bn.
The meeting arranged by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) was attended by representatives from 17 companies to discuss several billion pounds package for the troubled sector. The representatives proposed various measures which included faster provision of credit, loan package from European Investment Bank, and special liquidity for auto manufacture finance companies.
The Government did not commit on package but agreed to study key issues raised by the manufacturers.
