Mazda2 records 84 mpg fuel economy in World MPG Marathon

Mazda2 diesel, representing Mazda Motors UK, won the second place in the ALD Automotive Excellium Fleet World MPG Marathon 2008. It recorded excellent fuel economy of 84.58mpg completing 410 miles of run.

MPG Marathon is organised to promote eco-driving and to create awareness as to how little bit thinking and ‘smart motoring’ techniques could contribute to substantial fuel savings.

A field of 39 cars of broad cross section from 22 manufacturers drove on a challenging route over variety of roads in north-west Midlands and the mid-Wales. The crews were challenged to improve upon official combined cycle fuel economy of their company’s car by the biggest margin.

Motoring journalist Sue Cooke, partnering with her daughter Joanne, spared no efforts in exploiting Mazda 2’s 5dr TS2 Diesel supermini, with smooth aerodynamics, light weight and an engine capable of 68ps, 160Nm, 2000rpm torque to capture second place. Sue Cooke and Joanne, after 2 days of competitive driving, achieved 19% improvement on the Mazda2’s official combined cycle fuel economy of 65.7mpg. This popular Mazda, qualifier of £35 road fund licence gives CO2 emission of just 114g/km.

Sue was overwhelmed and commented that she had never considered her driving being expertly economical, but application of ’smarter techniques’ like shifting up early, accelerating gently, advance planning in avoiding braking and common sense approach made them demonstrate huge potential of the Mazda2’s fuel economy.

Ross Durkin, organiser of the event commented that it is not what vehicle you drive but how you drive makes difference in achieving high fuel economy.
