Mercedes Benz Looking To Buy Into Aston Martin

An interesting development could be a-brewing, if Mercedes indeed makes a bid for stake at Aston Martin. Unconfirmed stories to this effect have been doing the rounds among trusted circles in Germany.

This news could well be true, especially considering the timing and situation amid which these stories have cropped up. Aston Martin is currently in the hands of Kuwaiti company DAR, and this Kuwaiti Investment authority also owns a 7% stake in Daimler AG, the parent of Mercedes Benz.

Aston Martin is just learning to get self sufficient after coming out of the Ford Motors’ umbrella. Being a relatively small car making company, they have to make their own alliances with regards to suppliers of components. Mercedes Benz, being one of the world’s best known car makers, could really boost Aston Martin’s future and make it a lot more secure, if this deal would actually materialize.

But it is not only Aston Martin that would potentially gain from this tie up. Mercedes Benz has had a well publicized fall out with its long time partner McLaren over the Mercedes McLaren SLR , the production of which is to stop next year. This makes it the apt time for Mercedes Benz to tap into Aston Martin’s technology know how to produce a new SL based super car on a new light-weight aluminum platform.

This new obviously bodes well for both companies, especially due to the prospect of future collaborations, with the new aluminum chassis SL being high up on that list, along with some new models to add to Aston Martin’s current three car line up of the DBS, DB9 and V8 Vantage.
