New Mercedes-Benz assistance systems

Germany’s data of accidents reveals a worrying trend with over 50,000 rear-end collisions every year, resulting in death or serious injury to over 5,700 victims. Considering the gravity of the matter, Mercedes-Benz decided to conduct an analysis of accident research data. Based on the analysis, it concluded that its DISTRONIC PLUS and Brake Assist PLUS systems can effectively minimise accidents. These systems are based on sophisticated radar technology.

The introduction of the new system, which activates emergency braking to prevent collision, can prevent 20 per cent of rear-ends collisions in Germany, it is believed. The engineers at Stuttgart analysed data of 16,000 traffic accidents within GIDAS (German In-Depth Accident Study) framework. They evaluated the safety potential of DISTRONIC PLUS and Brake Assist PLUS assistance systems by reconstructing 800 rear end collisions, and calculating how many of those accidents could have been avoided if the cars were equipped with these systems. They concluded that 20 per cent of accidents could be prevented.

The DISTRONIC PLUS proximity control system maintains a safe distance from the vehicle in front of your car and brings your vehicle to a complete halt in case of an emergency depending on the traffic conditions.
