Nissan resorts to output cut at Sunderland plant
Nissan, the Japanese auto giant, has decided to suspend Micra car production at its flagship Sunderland plant for several weeks.
The credit crisis is tightening its grip on the real economy and Nissan’s move is a pointer that the economy is heading towards recession.
The production cut at the Sunderland plant would be in force until Christmas, making Nissan the third car maker in last few weeks to slash production to avoid big stockpiling. Building of Micra and Note cars would be suspended for 2 weeks beginning November1 to be followed by 3 weeks of reduced shifts. There are no plans to remove permanent staff but temporary contracts would face cancellation.
The reduction in output over the year to March 2009 is expected to be 10%. According to Nissan’s spokesman, very high inventory is the industry wide problem which is compounded by dim prospects of revival in demand in the short term.
Nissan’s move is not in isolation. In the last week of September Jaguar/ Land Rover announced suspension of production for a week at Halewood, Merseyside. In the month of August, Ford cancelled renewal of 124 short-term staff contracts in Southampton Transit factory due to downslide in the UK market.
