One third British workforce to lose jobs at Nissan
Nissan is set to cut 1,200 jobs at Sunderland factory, rendering almost 33% of workforce jobless as demand for cars took big slump in Europe due to recession. 800 permanent positions and 400 temporary contracts will no longer exist, bringing Japanese manufacturer’s strength of 3,800 factory staff down to 2,600.
Nissan had been exporting majority of 80% of its 5 different models of cars built at Sunderland plant to Europe. But EU car sales are now less than 75% of what they were a year ago and chances of immediate recovery are bleak.
According to senior group vice president Trevor Mann, Sunderland plant was operating in extremely difficult circumstances not of company’s making. He emphasised that it was necessary to initiate corrective action to remain in strong position once the business conditions returned to normalcy. Unavoidably this necessitated very tough decisions for safeguarding company’s long-term future.
Until September Nissan was on target for record annual production, but the biggest slump in demand caused upheaval. Nissan will now produce 70,000 less vehicles by end of March than last year’s total of 370,000 units.
Nissan, North East Chamber of Commerce and One North East have formed a group to help Nissan’s affected staff.
