Skoda records impressive growth in 2008
Skoda’s sales in 2008 grew by 7.1 to 674,530 vehicles, setting new record in the Czech Republic’s largest automaker’s history. In the backdrop of serious financial crisis during second half of last year, this is highly impressive performance by Skoda Auto.
Company performed primarily well in the Eastern European and Chinese markets. Sales in West Europe were not that low although passenger car market witnessed slump of 8.4%, but the brands market share in this region grew to 2.3 per cent.
Eastern Europe’s Skoda sales increased by 30.1% to 123,630 vehicles with Russia becoming the biggest growing market where Skoda sold 50,733 vehicles, registering a year-on-year growth of 84.2%.
Skoda Auto delivered 59,284 vehicles to China in 2008, an increase of 117% compared to 2007 sales. A further 16,051 were sold to Indian customers, 31.9% more than 2007.
Germany remained strongest market for Skoda in Western Europe. Its market share grew 3.9% despite overall slump of 1.8% in passenger car sales in the market. New registrations in Germany in 2008 were 121,277, 2% more than in 2007.
Octavia Tour was the best selling model with increase of 11.3% to 344,857 units in 2008. This was followed by Skoda Fabia with sale of 246,561 vehicles, an increase of 5.9%. The new generation Skoda Superb had biggest percentage growth of 24.9%, 25,645 units in total.
