The Volkswagen Jetta TDI Clean Diesel wins ‘Green Car of the Year’ award
The Green Car Journal has crowned Volkswagen’s Jetta TDI Clean Diesel ‘2009 Green Car of the Year’at the Los Angeles Motor Show.
The Volkswagen Jetta’s win of this prestigious award is special in the sense that it is the first diesel car to receive Green title.
One of the jury from nine automotive and environmental experts was highly appreciative of Jetta TDI’s efficient performance, low emission and high fuel economy.
According to Green Car Journal’s publisher and editor Ron Cogan, hybrids had been subject of environmentally friendly vehicles in recent years. He adds that highly fuel efficient and certified for low emissions by 50 states, Jetta TDI marks arrival of clean diesel car. With refined handling and ride and affordable pricing it has made entry into the hybrids market as a strong competitor.
Volkswagen Jetta TDI is equipped with 4-cylinder 2.0-litre common rail engine of 140PS and 320 Nm torque at 1,750 rpm.
Two key design modifications have been incorporated into the engine to substantially reduce NOx emissions. Optimised combustion chamber construction and injection processes at very high pressures minimise creation of NOx. Recirculation of exhaust gas in the chamber reduces Oxygen concentration with which Nitrogen reacts and controls combustion temperature. This process helps in reducing temperature-dependent NOx emissions to the extent of 60%.
With these modifications Volkswagen Jetta TDI is able to meet strictest emission standards BIN5, equivalent to the Euro 6 standard.
