TRW Automotive enhances safety with its Automatic Emergency Braking system

TRW Automotive Holdings Corp. announced the development of its Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) system. The system will substantially reduce the severity of accidents and protect the drivers and passengers from serious injuries. In situations when driver is unable to avoid collision, AEB’s advanced environmental sensing and brake system will automatically bring a vehicle to halt and potentially reduce damage caused by a severe impact.

Explaining the working of the system, Josef Pickenhahn, vice president of braking engineering for TRW mentions, that in case of an imminent crash the combination of advanced driver assist system and premium electronic stability control in AEB will reduce vehicle speed automatically.

Long or Medium Range Radars with video camera in combination can be used in AEB system for gathering long and wider field view and detecting other objects and vehicles. The data is fed to control unit and compared every 40 milliseconds in data fusion. Both sensors verify criticality of foreseeable crash and signal deployment of AEB to decelerate the vehicle through electronic stability control, which quickly builds high brake pressure.

TRW Automotive products include integrated vehicle control, and systems for steering, suspension, occupant safety (seat belts and airbags), engine components, aftermarket replacement parts and services.
