UK Intellectual Property Office to decide owner of rights to the MG name in the UK

A descendant of English motoring dynasty, William Riley has claimed that he owns the rights to produce the MGX Power, a hand made racing car which is priced at £85,000. He has taken on China’s largest carmaker Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation in the battle over Britain’s iconic brands.

The Chinese manufacturer that acquired the MG assets last year has invested millions of pounds in restarting former MG Rover factory in Longbridge, Birmingham. It brought workers back to a plant after more than 6,000 jobs were lost when MG Rover went bankrupt.

SAIC is planning to deliver its two-seater MGTF roadster to UK show rooms in September.  The dispute between SAIC and Riley has been going on since last year and intensified when Riley tried to revoke 32 other MG trademarks of Nanjing Automotive Corporation which merged with SAIC in 2007.

The UK Intellectual Property Office is entrusted to find out who owns the rights to the MG name in the UK.
The TF two-seater is expected to be sold in the UK through a network of about 50 dealers. Limited order for 300 has been booked for the launch model.

Riley’s X-Power, is assembled from a number of leftover parts and chassis acquired by him from liquidators of the MG Rover Group company. His car will have a 540bhp Ford V-8 engine and top speed of 200mph. Riley plans to produce 6 cars per month for the British motoring enthusiasts.
