UK Police can’t handle CCTV data
The Uk Police just announced that they can’t deal with the amount of information produced by CCTV systems. Cameras are everywhere across uk and specially on roads. But if the police cannot use them to track criminal what is the use for them.
The uk has around 4 million surveillance cameras all equipped with plate recognition system. This system uses optical character recognition to find out you plate registration from a picture. It can then be compared to a list of reg plate and see if the car is in the Police “wanted” list. The problem is a car can go through a number of CCTV without being picked up because the data gets drawn in the flood of other information. The fault is due to the lack of human resources able to work with CCTV datas.
Although fighting crime through camera surveillance is questionable, CCTV’s are a great help in managing road traffic and resolving insurance claim.
How is that related to the car industry? Well, when you take your brand new super car for a ride don’t forget you are watched from every angles. Speeding is considered as a crime and is punished severely. Of course you might be lucky enough and not get caught but the time will come.
