Valeo to equip one million Peugeot vehicles with its Stop-Start Technology
Valeo has entered into contract with PSA Peugeot Citroen to equip its one million vehicles with its Stop-Start (StARS) technology by 2011. Valeo, an industrial Group engaged in design, production and sale of components, integrated systems for cars and trucks, ranks among the world’s top automotive suppliers. It has 122 plants and 61 R&D centres located in 27 countries.
Thierry Morin, Valeo Chairman & CEO declared this as an important contract and an expression of confidence by PSA group in Valeo’s strategy. He stated that the company wants to provide access to affordable solutions to the largest number of motorists.
The StARS technology can reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions up to 15% in urban driving cycles. According to an estimate, the engine of a car remains idle as the car spends one-third of its time at a standstill in congested cities. This makes the Stop-Start function more useful and essential and Valeo is gearing up to make it widely available on all types of vehicles worldwide.
The engine of a vehicle is automatically cut off by the StARS system when the vehicle comes to standstill at a red signal or in a traffic jam and restarts it instantaneously after releasing the brake pedal. It replaces the alternator and starter motor and can be installed easily on any vehicle. PSA Peugeot Citroen is the first company in the auto industry to adopt StARS in mass production of Citroen C2 and C3.
