Volvo XC60 receives highest rating in Euro NCAP evaluation

The Volvo XC60 received highest rating in Euro NCAP’s evaluation of degree of whiplash protection.

The Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS) offers protection in case of rear-ends collision of passenger cars. Volvo XC60 was one of only five cars to get the highest rating. It also received five stars rating in Euro NCAP’s Adult Occupant Protection tests involving front and side impacts.

The new procedure for whiplash protection Euro NCAP evaluation involves large number of different tests. First test involves measurement of seat’s geometry to determine how well the car occupant could be protected by the seat from injuries in case of a collision. This test is followed by 3 tests in a rig with different degrees of collision severity. The rig stimulates rear-end collision with a stationary car. After these tests results are evaluated for grading the car on scale of green, orange and red. Green indicating good, orange indicating marginal and red indicating poor.

Volvo XC60 performed very well in all the tests and was given ‘green’ rating, claimed safety expert, Thomas Broberg, at Volvo Cars.

Whiplash injuries are the most common type of road injury and occur in rear-end collision. Prevention of this injury can minimise suffering and save expenses in treating injuries sustained in the collision.

Broberg explained that whiplash protection system supports head and entire back and facilitates movement of head along with torso. Volvo XC60’s head restraint and backrest are sufficiently high and located close to head.

WHIPS technology was introduced for Volvo S80 in 1998 and has been a standard feature on all models of Volvo since 2000. The system is claimed to reduce long-term effects of injuries by 50%.
